The real star here is Jessie Willcox Smith, whose ten full-page color plates and decorative illustrated endpapers (featuring an Old Curiosity Shop scene) make this a favorite among Golden Age illustration collectors.

The book runs 259 pages in black cloth boards with a paste-on pictorial front cover. Honest wear is present: the last letters of "Dickens" on the front paste-on are missing, the spine has some splitting that has been stable for over 30 years, and the covers show rubbing, edge wear, and soiling. A previous artist-owner added colored pencil marks to the endpapers and a light line on one text page, but the text block itself remains good and crisp.
