Pair of Vintage Chinese Satsuma-Style Ceramic Koi Fish Planters / Bowls

A striking pair of vintage Chinese Satsuma-style ceramic bowls, each measuring roughly 6.5" high by 5" in diameter. The interiors are hand-painted with swimming koi fish framed by a decorative red and pink floral band around the rim.

The exteriors are richly worked with birds, blossoms and scenic panels, all accented with fine gold brushwork over a soft crackle-glaze ground. No maker's marks are present, as is typical for pottery of this type and age.

Both pieces present very well. One bowl shows crazing on the interior with a perfect exterior, and some staining on the underside from prior use as a planter; it has been left unwashed. Sold together as a pair, they make handsome display bowls or planters for a shelf, mantel or entryway.
