Living with an HOA - Love It or Leave It!

I thought I would like living in a community governed by an HOA. There are some perks, I admit. People's lawns are kept nicely, houses are clean on the exterior, cars are not parked haphazardly on the streets, and there are no flags all over a home.

That being said, everyone is a copy of their neighbor. Everyone follows the same guidelines to manage common areas and protect property values. The rules also limit personal freedom regarding home modifications and property.

All homes are the same color, have the same mailboxes, and use the same roof material; holiday decorations are limited, as is the time they are used to decorate.

Pets have restrictions and are limited to where they can run. Leash laws can inhibit a dog from running and exercising. It is true that not all dogs are nice and friendly, and they can mess other yards.

Living in an HOA provides access to shared amenities such as pools, parks, a clubhouse, gyms, and clubs.

Fees and dues are mandatory for all homes within the community, which usually increase over time.

Overzealous HOA people assigned to scout the community for lawbreakers can be a nuisance. Not pulling your garbage cans in or putting them out too early can earn the homeowner a fine. Legal action and liens can be taken for community offenders. Permission must be granted for building a fence or changing a door color.

Living in an HOA community is not for everyone. You may have to give up decorating the front of your home, a special mailbox, or placing your smelly trash in your garage for a week before collection. You will have to limit the amount of furniture on your porch and outdoor parties.

Living in a community can build new friendships. It can also make you paranoid. Are you going to get a fine? What have you done wrong? Are your neighbors watching you? If you do not get along with your neighbors, their dogs, or find their habits irritating, life in an HOA community may add stress to your life.
